SINGLE TO RIGHT FIELD WITH A RUNNER AT SECOND BASE OR RUNNERS AT SECOND AND THIRD BASE

PITCHER—Will break for an area behind home plate to back up the possible throw from the right fielder to the catcher.

CATCHER—Will be responsible for the plate, setting up for a possible throw from the right fielder. He will help the first baseman get into the proper cut-off position.

FIRST BASEMAN—Once he reads the base hit to right field, he will immediately break for the cut-off position for the right fielder’s possible throw to the plate. The catcher will assist him in getting into the proper cut-off position. He will listen to the catcher for the possible cut-off throw to the plate or to second base.

SECOND BASEMAN—Once he reads the base hit to right field, he will break immediately for first base. He will be responsible for that base hoping to keep the batter-runner from taking a wide turn. Will set up at the base for a possible throw from the first baseman or the catcher. He will let the defense know if the batter-runner breaks for second base.

THIRD BASEMAN—Will be responsible for third base along with watching the runner touch the base. He must be in a position to break toward the first baseman in cut-off position if a ball deflects off him. As soon as he sees that there will be a play at the plate, he will start moving toward the cut-off man. He must be in a position to return to the base for a possible play on the batter-runner.

SHORTSTOP—Will be responsible for second base, preparing for a possible throw to the base from the right fielder if he has no play at the plate. He will listen for the second baseman to let him know if the batter-runner is breaking for second base even though he should be able to see the runner while facing the right fielder. If the ball is thrown by the right fielder to the plate, he will prepare for a possible throw to second base by the first baseman or the catcher.

LEFT FIELDER—As soon as he reads the base hit to right field, he will immediately break for an area behind third base to back up that base on any possible play that might develop where a throw is made to third base. Also in a position to back up the right fielder’s throw to second base.

CENTER FIELDER—Backs up the right fielder. When the right fielder cleanly fields the ball, he will immediately break for an area behind second base to back up any throw made at that base by the first baseman or the catcher.

RIGHT FIELDER—Fields the ball so that he can make a possible play at the plate on the runner who started at second base. If he feels that he has a definite play on that runner, he will throw to the plate through the first baseman serving as the cut-off man. If there is no chance for a play at the plate he will throw the ball to the shortstop at second base to prevent the batter-runner from advancing. He must be aware of backing up first base if a play is made on the batter-runner taking a wide turn
